In an opinion published by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Food and Drug Administration of Europe, it says Bisphenol A (BPA), the chemical compound used to make plastic products such as baby bottles, storage containers and tableware, is generally safe.
"In a scientific opinion published in July 2008, EFSA concluded that after exposure to BPA the human body rapidly metabolises and eliminates the substance. These results confirm that exposure to BPA is well below the Tolerable Daily Intake of 0,05 mg/kg bw, previously set by EFSA. Newborns can similarly clear BPA at levels far in excess of the TDI. EFSA took into account both the previous and the most recent information and data available."

BPA, if ingested in high concentration, may have serious effects on the hormone system because the chemical can mimic the female sex hormone, oestrogen.
