Brian Balaon, a 22-year-old farmer in the Philippines who has killed and eaten an endangered eagle, may face up to 12 years in prison if convicted, according to the BBC.
The bird in question is a Philippine eagle that was rescued from captivity in 2006 and was released into the wild just March of this year. It is estimated there are less than 250 of these eagles left in the wild.
The death of the bird was discovered when wildlife officials noticed the tracking device attached to the bird while in captivity signaled that it hasn't move in awhile. When the officials went looking for it, all they've found are the bone remains.
Then Balaon stepped up and volunteered that he had shot the bird and eaten it with a friend.
There's a lesson to be learned here...
