Variety is reporting that DreamWorks has landed the rights to "Ghost in the Shell," which it intends to produce into a live-action 3D (as in stereo) movie.

Universal and Sony was also pursuing the rights, but Steven Spielberg took a personal interest in the property and won over the rights holder.

"'Ghost in the Shell' is one of my favorite stories," Spielberg said. "It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks."
