Study: Being Sexist Can Net You More Money

Male/female symbol According to a study (PDF) published in September's issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology, men who thinks a woman's place is at home generally earns more than "modern-thinking" men.

"Our results illustrate that gender role orientation, as a means of preserving the historical separation of work and domestic roles, tends to do exactly that, even in today's workforce of roughly equal participation rates for men and women. Specifically, traditional gender role orientation provides men with strong earnings advantages, even when relevant control variables are taken into account."

Why is that so? Winchester University's Dr Magdalena Zawisza has this to say,

"It could be that more traditionally-minded men are interested in power, both in terms of access to resources - money in this case - and also in terms of a woman who is submissive.

"Another theory suggests that employers are more likely to promote men who are the sole earner in preference to those who do not - they recognise that they need more support for their families, because they are the breadwinner."
