Whether Viacom wants it or not, Steven Spielberg is mostly likely leaving its umbrella come this fall. What is less certain are the movies being produced by DreamWorks.
If what Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman said is any indication, they're not going to let Spielberg leave and reconstitute DreamWorks that easily.
Here's what he said at the PricewaterhouseCoopers Entertainment & Media Outlook report launch event (via The Hollywood Reporter):
"I have been enjoying a great relationship with Steven. To the extent that he decides that he'd like to have more autonomy (and get financing) ... we'll work with him in one capacity or another."
"It will work out the right way for all involved. We want (Spielberg) to be happy, and I'm sure he wants us to be happy."
Translation: We paid lots of money for DreamWorks, so we're not letting you off the hooks that easily.
Expect some tough negotiations ahead between Spielberg and Viacom for the fates of current and future projects, wherever they may be.
